Rammed earth is one of humanity's oldest building techniques, dating back thousands of years. Think of the Great Wall of China, or the ancient adobe dwellings of the American Southwest—structures built to withstand time, with a warmth and texture that feels inherently human. But in a world that craves modernity, traditional rammed earth often fell short: limited color options, rigid textures, and a reputation for being "too rustic" for contemporary designs. COLORIA saw this not as a limitation, but as an opportunity.
"Why should tradition be static?" asks Maria Gonzalez, COLORIA's Lead Material Designer. "Rammed earth has this incredible ability to connect us to the earth, to history. We wanted to keep that soul but give it a voice that speaks to today's architects—those who dream in gradients, in bold transitions, in textures that feel both familiar and new."
And so, the gradient rammed earth board was born. Unlike traditional rammed earth, which typically features solid, earthy tones, COLORIA's version is a symphony of color transitions. Imagine a wall that shifts from soft terracotta to warm sand, or from muted sage to deep olive—each gradient telling a different story. But how do they do it? It starts with the soil. COLORIA sources natural, locally-sourced clays and aggregates, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Then, through a proprietary mixing process, pigments are blended in precise layers, compressed under high pressure, and cured to create a material that's not just visually stunning, but also remarkably durable.
Take the rammed earth board (gradient c) and rammed earth board (gradient b) —two of COLORIA's most sought-after options. Gradient c leans into earthy warmth, transitioning from soft khaki to rich terracotta, perfect for spaces that aim to feel cozy and grounded, like boutique hotels or residential living rooms. Gradient b, on the other hand, plays with cooler tones: think misty gray blending into deep slate, ideal for modern offices or urban cafes that want to exude sophistication without feeling cold.
But it's not just about color. The texture of COLORIA's gradient rammed earth is a tactile experience. Run your hand over it, and you'll feel the subtle ridges of compressed earth, the way light catches the color transitions, creating depth that flat paints or synthetic materials can never replicate. "We had a client in Tokyo who used our gradient rammed earth for a restaurant's feature wall," recalls David Chen, COLORIA's Asia Pacific Sales Director. "The space went from feeling generic to feeling like a journey through a Japanese garden at dawn—all because of how the light shifts across the gradient. Diners would stop and touch the wall, ask about the material. That's the magic of it: it turns buildings into experiences."
Durability, too, is non-negotiable. Traditional rammed earth can be prone to cracking in humid climates or fading under harsh sunlight. COLORIA's gradient boards address this with a specialized sealant that protects against moisture and UV rays, ensuring the colors stay vibrant for decades. "We tested these boards in the deserts of Dubai and the rainforests of Brazil," says Chen. "They held up. That's the difference between a material that looks good on a sample board and one that performs in the real world."
