| Material | pH Resistance Range | Durability in Saudi Conditions (Estimated Lifespan) | Aesthetic Versatility | Sustainability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Danxia Rammed Earth Board | 5–11 | 50+ years | High (warm terracotta, customizable textures, blends with MCM flexible stone accents) | High (recyclable materials, low carbon footprint) |
| Fair-Faced Concrete | 6–9 | 25–30 years (with regular maintenance) | Low (uniform gray, limited texture options) | Medium (high embodied carbon, but recyclable) |
| Travertine (Starry Red) | 6–8.5 | 30–35 years (prone to pitting in high alkalinity) | Very High (vibrant red with crystalline "star" patterns) | Medium (quarrying impacts, but durable) |
| Lunar Peak Golden | 6.5–9 | 35–40 years (susceptible to color fading in UV light) | High (metallic gold sheen, modern appeal) | Medium (synthetic components, energy-intensive production) |
When architects at Omrania were designing Al Jawhara, a 400-unit residential complex in north Riyadh, they faced a problem: the site's soil pH was 9.1, well above the comfort zone for most cladding materials. They needed something that could withstand the alkaline ground moisture without compromising the project's "desert modernism" aesthetic. Enter Danxia Rammed Earth Board. The team chose a gradient color variant (light terracotta to deep amber) for the exterior cladding, paired with lunar peak golden accents for the balconies. Two years post-construction, inspections show zero signs of corrosion or discoloration. "We expected some fading, maybe minor cracks, but Danxia has held up better than we dared hope," says project engineer Lina Al-Mansoori. "Even the areas closest to the soil—where pH levels are highest—look as good as the day they were installed."
Jeddah's coastal location means high humidity and salt spray, which can accelerate corrosion in building materials. For the Jeddah Coastal Cultural Center, a landmark project celebrating Saudi maritime history, the design team wanted a material that could handle the coastal pH (8.2) while evoking the warm tones of traditional Najdi architecture. They selected Danxia Rammed Earth Board for the exterior walls and paired it with travertine (starry red) for interior accent walls. The result? A building that feels both rooted in heritage and resilient to the elements. "We tested three materials side-by-side for 18 months: Danxia, fair-faced concrete, and travertine," says lead architect Omar Khalid. "The concrete cracked, the travertine pitted, but Danxia? It just… endured. We're now specifying it for all our coastal projects."
