When a facade or an interior wall calls for a natural stone look, the choice usually comes down to two very different materials: vitrified tile board and MCM project board. Both can deliver the appearance of stone, but they are engineered in completely different ways, and the decision affects everything from structural load to installation time and long-term maintenance. MCM stands for Modified Clay Material. Vitrified tile board is a conventional ceramic product fired at high temperature until the body becomes dense and glass-like. It is rigid, hard and heavy, and it is widely used for floors and walls where impact resistance and abrasion are the priority. Because the body is non-porous, vitrified tiles are also a common choice for wet areas. The trade-off is that the material cannot bend, and its weight places real demands on the structure behind it.
The most obvious difference is weight. A typical MCM project board weighs roughly 3 to 7 kg per square metre, while vitrified tile board commonly weighs 20 kg per square metre or more. On a high-rise facade, a renovation where the existing structure cannot take extra load, or a lightweight steel-frame building, that difference can decide whether a material is feasible at all. Lighter boards also mean simpler fixings, cheaper transport and less risk during handling on site.
This is where the two materials separate most clearly. Vitrified tile board is rigid: to cover a curved column or an arched wall, it has to be cut into many small pieces, leaving visible joints and requiring slow, skilled labour. An MCM project board bends to follow the surface, so a column, a curved reception wall or an undulating facade can be clad continuously with the look of solid stone. For architects working with curved or parametric geometry, this is a capability vitrified tile simply does not offer.
MCM project boards are typically only 2 to 5 mm thick and are bonded to a prepared surface with adhesive, more like a large-format tile or wallpaper than a stone panel. Vitrified tile board is thicker and usually needs a substructure or mechanical anchoring, which adds material cost, labour time and skill requirements. The adhesive-bonded installation of MCM reduces the skill barrier, speeds up the schedule and cuts the cost of the supporting system.
For exterior facades, fire classification matters and is often regulated. Quality MCM project boards carry an A2 fire rating, meaning they are effectively non-combustible and suitable for facades with strict fire requirements. They also perform well across temperature ranges and pass freeze-thaw testing for exterior use. Vitrified tile is itself non-combustible, but the mortar and fixing systems around it, and the extra weight it adds, can complicate structural design and compliance.
Both materials can imitate natural stone, but they do it differently. Vitrified tiles rely largely on printed patterns on a flat surface. MCM project boards are moulded from actual stone surfaces, so the texture carries genuine relief that reads as the real thing from a normal viewing distance. If a project specifically wants the mass, depth and thermal behaviour of a dense ceramic body, or a ventilated rainscreen with a deep cavity, a traditional system may still be the right call. The point is to match the material to the goal: vitrified tile for hard-wearing flat surfaces, MCM project board for light weight, curves, speed and fire compliance.
Choose vitrified tile board when the surface is flat, load-bearing capacity is not a concern, and the priority is hardness under foot traffic. Choose the MCM Project Board Series when the project involves curved surfaces, weight constraints, fast installation timelines, or a budget that makes heavy cladding unworkable. On those projects, MCM is not a compromise — it is the smarter specification.
