Bathrooms are the toughest room in any home. Steam, splashes, and constant humidity test every material you put on the walls, which is why most people settle for cold ceramic tile or expensive natural stone. There is a third option that combines the warm, layered look of rammed earth with the practical demands of a wet room: rammed earth board.
Rammed earth board is a flexible modified clay panel that reproduces the stratified texture of traditional rammed earth walls in a thin, lightweight sheet. It is water-resistant, mold-resistant, and fire-rated, which makes it a surprisingly good fit for bathrooms. And because the material bends, it can wrap around corners, columns, and curved shower walls without the heavy framing that real rammed earth demands.
This guide walks you through installing rammed earth board in a bathroom, step by step, with the waterproofing details that matter most in a wet space.

One rule applies to every adhesive you choose: never use acid-curing silicone. Acid reacts with the stone surface and causes permanent discoloration. Stick with neutral silicone or MS polymer for sealing work.
The panel is only as good as the wall behind it. In a bathroom, that means three checks before anything else:
Repair cracks before you start. Fill hairline fractures with a flexible caulk and larger gaps with a repair mortar, then sand flush. In the shower zone, apply a waterproofing membrane to the substrate before installing the panels. This extra layer is what keeps water from reaching the wall behind the boards.
Two substrate notes that catch people out. First, do not install directly over gypsum board: the paper facing weakens the bond. Prime it with a water-based primer first, or replace it with a cement board in wet areas. Second, if you are renovating, rammed earth board can go straight over existing bathroom tiles as long as the tile surface is flat, firm, and clean.
Snap horizontal and vertical control lines on the wall so every panel has a reference point. Lay the panels out on the floor first to match the texture and color variations between boards, and mark the positions of outlets, light switches, and fixtures on the wall. A few minutes of planning here saves a lot of wasted material later.
Measure twice, cut once. Score the face of the panel with a utility knife along a straightedge and snap it, or use a fine-tooth saw for thicker boards. For outlets, mark the panel, drill a starter hole, and finish with a jigsaw. Sand any rough edges with fine-grit paper so adjacent panels sit flush.
Because the color runs through the full thickness of the board, a chipped edge is visible, so take your time on every cut.
In a bathroom, the adhesive does double duty: it holds the panel and it keeps water out. Use the double-sided spreading method. Comb a layer of polymer-modified tile adhesive onto the wall with a notched trowel, then apply a thin coat to the back of the panel. Full coverage is mandatory; spot bonding is not acceptable in a wet room because it leaves voids where moisture can collect.
For the shower zone itself, upgrade to a two-component epoxy adhesive. It is fully waterproof, chemically resistant, and has almost zero shrinkage, which makes it the most stable choice where water hits the wall every day. Work in small sections, because the adhesive skins over after about 20 to 30 minutes and will not bond properly once it does.
Start at the bottom of the wall and work upward so panels do not slide. Press each panel firmly against the adhesive, sliding it slightly side to side so the adhesive ridges collapse and make full contact. Tap gently with a rubber mallet and check plumb and level as you go. Stagger the seams like brickwork so you never end up with one long vertical joint, which is a weak point in a wet room.
This is where the flexibility of the material pays off. Internal corners can be wrapped by bending the panel at room temperature. For sharp external corners, bevel the edges at 45 degrees so the two panels meet in a clean 90-degree joint. In cold weather, warm the panel with a heat gun to make it more pliable before bending.
Leave a small expansion gap of 3 to 5 mm between panels. The board expands and contracts slightly with temperature and humidity, and a tight joint will eventually push or crack. The gap disappears once you grout.
Once the adhesive has cured, usually after 24 hours, fill the joints with a waterproof, anti-mold grout. Press the grout into the gaps with a rubber float held at an angle, then wipe the surface clean with a damp sponge before the grout hardens. The grout is not just cosmetic; it is the seal that stops water from working its way behind the panels.
After the grout cures, apply a penetrating stone sealer over the whole surface. It soaks into the panel and boosts water and stain resistance without changing the look. Seal the edges around the bathtub, shower tray, and fixtures with neutral silicone, and let everything cure for 24 to 72 hours before the bathroom goes back into use.
Rammed earth board is low maintenance. Wipe the walls with mild soap and water, skip abrasive scrubbers, and reapply the sealer once a year or whenever water stops beading on the surface. Good bathroom ventilation also helps, because it lets the room dry out between showers and keeps humidity from settling on the walls.
Installing rammed earth board in a bathroom comes down to three things: a flat, dry, waterproofed substrate; a full-coverage, bathroom-grade adhesive; and properly sealed joints. Get those right and you get a wall that looks like natural earth, feels warm underfoot and to the touch, and stands up to years of steam and splashes.
