In the heart of Berlin's Mitte district, a small café named "Wald & Stein" (Forest & Stone) wanted to escape the concrete jungle without leaving the city. The owner, a former environmentalist, dreamed of a space where patrons could sip lattes surrounded by textures that evoked hiking trails and mountain cabins. Enter COLORIA MCM's design team, who turned to Poly Wood Board as the foundation of this vision.
The café's walls are clad in Poly Wood Board with a rich, chestnut-toned finish—its grain patterns mimicking the look of aged oak, but with none of the warping or maintenance issues of real wood. "We chose Poly Wood because it could handle the humidity from the espresso machines and the daily wear of customers leaning against the walls," explains lead architect Lena Schmidt. "But more importantly, it feels alive . When the morning light hits the boards, you swear you can see sunlight filtering through trees."
To balance the wood's warmth, the team paired it with MCM flexible stone in "Lime Stone (Beige)" for the countertop and accent walls. The stone's soft, porous texture (a signature of MCM flexible stone) adds a earthy contrast, like moss growing on tree bark. "We wanted to create a dialogue between wood and stone—two materials that coexist in nature," Schmidt adds. "The Poly Wood Board wraps around the space like a forest canopy, while the flexible stone grounds it, like the forest floor."
The result? A café that's become a neighborhood staple. Regulars rave about how "it doesn't feel like Berlin here"—and that's exactly the point. "One customer told me she comes here to work because it's the only place where she doesn't feel stressed," the owner (laughs). "That's the power of materials that tell a story."
