In downtown Chicago's West Loop, a former factory building presented a unique challenge: converting a 2,500-square-foot space with exposed brick and steel beams into a home that felt "soft" enough for daily life. For designer Mia Patel, the key was balancing the loft's industrial bones with organic materials—and dark grey rammed earth board, paired with
travertine (starry blue), became her secret weapon.
"The client, a tech executive who works long hours, wanted a space that would 'unwind' him the second he walked in," Patel says. "Industrial design can feel cold, so we needed something to add warmth without losing that edge." The solution: a dark grey rammed earth accent wall in the bedroom, its rough texture playing off the smooth, polished surface of
travertine (starry blue) used for the bathroom walls. The
travertine's subtle blue veining, Patel notes, "picks up the color of the Chicago skyline visible from the windows, tying the interior to the city outside."
In the living area, a rammed earth fireplace surround becomes a focal point, its irregular surface contrasting with the loft's sleek concrete floors and black steel furniture. "We sanded the rammed earth just enough to smooth the edges, but left the deeper grooves to catch the light," Patel explains. "At night, when the LED strips behind the TV glow, the wall casts these beautiful shadows—it's like bringing a piece of the outdoors in, even on the gloomiest Chicago days."
The client, who requested anonymity, shares: "I used to dread coming home to a sterile apartment. Now, I walk in and immediately feel my shoulders drop. That rammed earth wall… it's like a reminder that there's a world beyond screens and spreadsheets. It's grounding."
