Step-by-step dry-set installation

2. Add a crushed stone base. Spread crushed limestone or a similar angular aggregate in layers of a few inches, compacting each layer before adding the next. A total base depth of 4 to 6 inches is typical for patios and walkways. The sharp edges of crushed limestone lock together and create a stable, well-draining base that keeps pavers from shifting over time.
3. Install edge restraints. A border — whether a concrete curb, metal edging, or a soldier course of pavers set in mortar — holds the field in place. Without edge restraints, pavers will drift outward over time.
4. Level with sand. Add a thin layer of concrete sand over the compacted base and screed it flat. A light, even layer is what you want — too much sand will settle unevenly.
5. Lay the pavers. Start from a corner and work outward, setting each paver snugly against its neighbors. Tap each paver gently into place with a rubber mallet, and check the level frequently, adjusting the sand beneath as needed.
6. Cut pavers as needed. A diamond blade rated for natural stone cuts travertine cleanly. Measure carefully before cutting, and wear appropriate eye and ear protection.
7. Fill the joints. Sweep polymeric sand into the joints and compact the surface. Polymeric sand hardens slightly when activated with water, locking the pavers together and keeping weeds and insects out. Alternatively, the joints can be left open or filled with a fine sand.
8. Compact and finish. Run a plate compactor over the surface, then add a little more joint sand and sweep again.

Driveway considerations

Driveways place far more stress on pavers than patios. A properly prepared base is the single most important factor in preventing cracking and settling. For residential driveways, a crushed stone base of 4 to 5 inches with a sand bedding layer is typical, and edge restraints are essential. Smaller pavers distribute vehicle loads better than large-format pieces, which is why many installers favor smaller units for driveways. Heavy vehicles — RVs, trucks, and trailers — may require a reinforced concrete base instead.

Point loads are another risk. Motorcycle kickstands, car jacks, and trailer tongue jacks concentrate weight on a very small area and can crack any paver. Use a load-spreading plate or a piece of plywood under such loads.

Pool decks and coping

Around a pool, travertine is prized for staying cool underfoot even in direct sun. For coping, flexible mortar is typically recommended, with a mortar bed of about an inch. Larger pieces suit straight pool edges, while smaller pieces follow curves more easily. Remember that all stone becomes more slippery when wet — travertine's natural texture helps, but it cannot eliminate the risk, so follow local pool safety codes.

Aftercare and maintenance

Travertine is a porous natural stone, so a little routine care goes a long way. Sweep regularly to keep grit from scratching the surface, and rinse with water when needed.
